Fate/Grand Order

Fate/Grand Order (FGO) is a mobile game that brings together characters, storylines, and universes from the TYPE-MOON company—primarily from the Fate series. Lasengle is the current lead game developer (a shift from Delightworks in 2022), and the game is published by Aniplex. Fate/Grand Order was originally released in Japan in 2015 and a North American server was created in 2017—there is an approximate two-year gap in content. Given I play on the North American server, all information on this site will be based on the official translations of content that has been released on that server to date.

Plot and Setting

The game begins in 2017, where the player (referred to as a Master) wakes up from being asleep in the halls of Chaldea—a secret organization that monitors for threats against humanity that is stationed in the Arctic Circle. Masters are typially mages who have the ability to summon heroic spirits (referred to as servants), and those brought to Chaldea also have capacity to rayshift, which is a form of quantum time travel. Not long after the game starts, there is a sudden and terrible explosion in the command room that kills majority of the individuals present. If that wasn't bad enough, Chaldea finds out that humanity no longer exists after the year 2018 based on the disruption of seven points in human history. Together with their Demi-Servant Mash Kyrielight, the Master must rayshift to each of these seven Singularities to restore them to their proper flow of time by retrieving the Holy Grail causing the distortion. In each singularity, the Master is able to form contracts and bonds with a variety of servants that support them in their mission.

Fate/Grand Order is a story centered on morality and the complex nature of humans: heroes and anti-heroes, hope and despair, trust and betrayal, past and future, etc. The main story is currently split into three major parts:

Part 1 - Observer at the Timeless Temple: This main story arc focuses on addressing the seven Singularities that result in the incineration of humanity. The chapters include Fuyuki, Orleans, Septem, Okeanos, London, E Pluribus Unum, Camelot, Babylonia, and Solomon.

Epic of Remnant: This portion of the story (referred to as part 1.5) refers to four "Pseudo-Singularities" that occur as a result of defeating the antagonist of the previous arc. These Singularities include Shinjuku, Agartha, Shimosa, and Salem.

Part 2 - Cosmos in the Lostbelt: The second main story arc takes place once the Foreign God descends onto the planet and turns all of Earth into a bleached surface. Proper Human History is erased and replaced by seven Lostbelts, which are alternate timelines that were originally pruned away as dead ends. The main Lostbelts include Anastasia, Götterdämmerung, S I N, Yuga Kshetra, Atlantis & Olympus, Avalon le Fae, and Nahui Mictlan. The second arc also includes Heian-kyou, Tunguska Sanctuary, and Traum.

Operation Ordeal Call: After defeating the original seven Lostbelts, Chaldea attemps to return to its base in the Antarctic, only to find they are no longer able to pass through its barrier due to their crime of creating contracts with extra class servants. This section of part 2 includes Paper Moon, Id, Archetype Inception, and Trinity Metatronius. Once these are completed, the player can move to finish the Final Chapter of Part 2.

Part 3 - One Second After Time: Part 3 began on the Japanese server in early 2026. I have tried to keep myself more-or-less spoiler free, so I will revisit this once it comes to the North America server. :)

Like other mobile games, Fate/Grand Order also has a variety of events between main story chapters. These events typically focus on holidays or times of year (i.e., Halloween, summer, etc.), collaborations with other TYPE-MOON works (i.e., Kara no Kyoukai, Fate/Extra, etc.), or other themes (i.e., folklore, historical events, etc.) and are generally not considered canon to the main story.

Where does Morgan Fit?

While mention of Morgan occurs earlier on due to her lore in the Arthurian legends, she is first introduced, and her story occurs primarily in the sixth Lostbelt: Avalon le Fae. She is the servant of Beryl Gut, who is the Crypter assigned to the Tree of Emptiness in Faerie Britain. Morgan was added to the pool of servants that the Master can summon in summer of 2023 as a limited 5* Berserker class servant. While Morgan makes some brief appearances in other events (i.e., Sea Monster Crisis, Chaldea Faerie Knight Cup, Valentines), her primary return to the spotlight is in the Servant Summer Festival 2025 event. She also was the anniversary servant that summer, getting a limited 5* caster servant version that includes her younger self as Aesc the Savior (ascensions 1 and 2) and her typical Morgan appearance in a summer outfit (ascension 3).

Game Mechanics

Fate/Grand Order is a mix of visual novel and a turn-based tactical card combat system with some RPG elements. The story is conveyed through the visual novel format, which often have battle nodes where the player can deploy up to six servants between a front and backline (three servants each). The game generally requires you to select a support servant borrowed from another player, but you can put them in the backline if you do not wish to use them. Each servant can equip a craft essence (CE) and various command codes that have unique combinations of stat boosts and other types of effects (i.e., evade, invincible, etc.). Servants are ranked by rarity (1* to 5*), which has implications for their max level and overall strength. The player is able to level and ascend servants up to four times, and can also use Holy Grails to level a servant beyond their associated max level cap (up to level 120).

The actual combat is based on the use of servant command cards that fall into one of three types: buster (raw damage), arts (charges noble phantasm), and quick (generates quick stars). Each can be used strategically in a chain with the same or other servants. All servants have a unique and powerful attack referred to as their Noble Phantasm (NP) that can only be used when the NP bar is at 100% or more. Servants also have a variety of skills that can be deployed with different levels and cooldown turn counts, and there is a rock-paper-scissors type class advantage system that informs resistances and weaknesses for each servant. While the battle mechanics are generally simple compared to other games, there is still much room for strategy when taking all of these considerations into place.

The player is also able to interact with servants in the My Room function, where tapping the servant prompts them to say a variety of things, such as their likes and dislikes, what they think of their relationship with the player, their reaction to the Holy Grail, etc. Some or all of the quotes shift depending on the ascension and bond level (at least through bond 5). They will even make comment to your birthday if you talk to them on the day!
